An Inside Look at The Pixel Dreams Ship

By Lannie Le at 2:06 am on Sunday, November 8, 2009 // Post a Comment

We love working at Pixel Dreams so much that we could easily spend over 80% of our time together; our spouses and kids often wonder why we love our jobs more. Ok, just kidding, my wife and kids are my iMac, iPhone, and Wii controller, and they have not complained yet! But seriously, we are passionate people, driven by the love of the job. Some of us see ourselves as crewmembers of another proud Starship, the Enterprise NCC1701 D. However, unlike members of Star Trek vessel our office chatter may occasionally veer off topic from the Prime Directives…If you haven’t come by to visit us yet, here’s the inside scoop on what’s happening on our ship:

Pancake Fridays: Our co-op students make us golden pancakes with a wide range of toppings each and every Friday morning. On November 13, we invited our clients and friends over for some delicious “we-appreciate-your-awesomeness” pancakes. Reeses’ Pieces and banana chocolate chips were among top choices.

Video Gaming: We hone our alter egos and competitive edge with a healthy dose of trash-talking and video game ass-kicking. More specifically, Dr. Mario, Mario Kart, and Mario Smash Bros, Street Fighters II, and World of Goo. Yep, we heart Nintendo and the Wii.

Yoga Nights: Nothing beats a sweaty yoga session to de-stress, detox and rejuvenate. We usually fight for the mats at the end of the room with the best views. I’m sure this needs no further explanation…

Learning Afternoons: Each team member picks an afternoon to learn something new, sharpen their skills, or work on something personal. Thank you Google for this awesome idea!

The Meeting House: On Sunday mornings some of us get together at the Meeting House at the Scotiabank Theatre for some thought-provoking podcast. The Meeting House is a church for people who aren’t into church. They are quite progressive with new technology to reach out to a younger and more open-minded audience. Sunday mornings usually start with “A Jew, a Muslim, A Buddhist, and an Atheist walk into a church…”

Creative Exercises: To further and nourish our creativity, we give engage in ample amounts of creative exercises. Sometimes we get together for evening brainstorming sessions and produce a complete piece of work, let it be a prosumer inspired Youtube viral or a spoof micro site. The challenge is to go from ideation to production, post-production, and submission in 8 – 10 hours, with energy drinks and Chinese food of course. We often find the results more creative than our menu orders ;)

Book Club: We challenge ourselves to read at least one book a month. The results of our book club have been no less than amazing. Blink, Outliers, and the Power of Now now occupy a special place on our bookshelves. Have you read anything thought provoking lately? Let us know!

TV Nights: Not everything shown on TV is evil. We heart Star Trek TNG, documentaries on nature, space, quantum mechanics, technology, futurism, and advertising. Mad Men Season 3 FTW!
