Cyber Monday?

By Pierre Monké at 2:07 am on Saturday, December 5, 2009 // Post a Comment

No, it’s not the first day of the week on The Transformer’s planet, Cybertron. Cyber Monday is a recent Internet phenomenon that occurs on the Monday that follows “Black Friday”, the American version of Boxing Day that happens the day after Thanksgiving.

Call it a sale-a-bration of Internet shopping culture. It’s believed that it was brought on as a marketing scheme for predominantly internet-based stores, or e-versions of the big box mainstays, that felt that they were missing out on a piece of the holiday shares. Although relatively new, (circa 2005) the impact of Cyber Monday is hitting non-US cyber-space, with significant sales spikes in Canada and the UK.

To anyone who may doubt the rise of the phenomenon, take a look at these stats. In November 2006, 10 % of Americans said they would shop on the Web on Cyber Monday. Sales in the US reached $610 Million in 2006 and $730 Million in 2007, with an estimated $900 Million for 2009. While nearly 87% of American retailers posted deals independently and on Cybermonday.com, a dedicated website created by the American National Retailers Association.

It is safe to assume that the day will continue to become an important barometer for the growth and health of the online sales market!
