Google + Apple = Star Trek World?

We have long passed the point of going back to a tech-less world. Have you accepted the fact that our lives are inseparable from the ambient and ubiquitous integration of technology? Every technological advance is capable of steering human kind to a new direction. Relatively speaking. Thus, examining the direction we are going versus the direction that we want to go is not just worthwhile but downright essential.

Google + Apple = China

My life, like yours, is an immersive environment of people, technologies and ideas. I aspire to anything that remotely resembles Star Trek technology, philosophy or way of life. Fortunately for us, we are not too far from such a future. So I believe. This idea stems from watching tech giants’ every move and seeing the trends and patterns form. Following news of the tech industry and watching Star Trek are among the most rewarding things on my daily calendar, besides envisioning a utopian future.

Recently there has been much coverage of the love-relationship-turn-sour between Google and Apple, specifically between the two leaders Eric Schmidt (Google) and Steve Jobs (Apple). To me it is nothing but brother rivalry. They publicly bash each other with hateful words, while still spotted meeting for coffee, as I am sure, to talk plans of world domination. Well, domination does bear a negative connotation, so let’s call it “design of the world’s future”. I can’t help but see the benefits of Google and Apple working together onwards, each still do their own thing, but with more integration and communication.

If you are a Trekkie, it is pretty obvious how much Star Trek has influenced both companies and their products. Does “Computer, locate Captain Picard” or “Computer, search all available linguistic records and find the meaning of Darmok” remind you of something? That’s right. Google Search. How about this device right here? Yup, it’s an iPad alright. Google’s mission is totally Trek. And Apple’s quest for integrated design and technology? Trek as well. Perhaps not so much their current Fascist way of controlling the mass, but I believe when paired with Google’s “Do No Evil” mantra, it will just work out for the betterment of our world.

What Google and Apple have to do with a Star Trek future for us? They each have Trek-inspired visions, leadership, and technology locked down. Now they just need to leave the fight for market shares behind and work together. Really truly work together. Then world domination is simply a matter of time.

In the meantime, I will resort to my imaginary holodeck, aka the almighty Internet.
